How cruel has the world gotten, Mom?
There’s seemingly no end to the right-wing group, One Million Moms’ anti-gay wrath.
They threatened to boycott JCPenny after the Texas-based retail chain appointed the openly gay Ellen DeGeneres as their spokesperson. “By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JCPenny is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years,” the group wrote on its website. Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres took to her show in defense. “Here are the values I stand for: I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you’d want to be treated and helping those in need,” she said. See Video.
One Million Moms are now condemning both DC Comics and Marvel Superheroes for introducing gay characters into their phenomenally popular comic book titles. They say:
“Unfortunately, children are now being exposed to homosexuality at an early age. Comic books would be one of the last places a parent would expect their child to be confronted with homosexual topics that are too complicated for them to understand. Children do not know what straight, homosexual, or coming out of the closet even means, but DC Comics and Marvel are using superheroes to confuse them on this topic to raise questions and awareness of an alternative lifestyle choice. These companies are prompting a premature discussion on sexual orientation.”
Well, what the hell?
How ridiculous can they get? A premature discussion on sexuality? So it’s ok for kids to understand that you are in love with an opposite sex person, and are married. But it is somehow damaging for them to know that same sex couples love one another and marry?
Kids don’t care. It is only ignorant, homophobic people that make this into an issue. Being honest with children about the reality, which is that sometimes boys fall love with boys and girls fall in love with girls, just like boys and girls fall in love? It’s not harmful. It’s simply the truth.
The only confusing thing for a child is to see a perfectly happy and healthy gay couple going about their lives like everyone else but then to be told by a hateful parent that gay people are horrible and evil and should never be seen or heard of in public spaces. That is called bad parenting.
And Christianity!
Some “Christians” ARE haters. They impose their values on those who don’t share them through legislation, discrimination and, yes, violence as has been extensively documented. Other Christians simply disagree with the concept of LGBT’s but respect their secular civil rights to varying degrees. Another group of Christians is more inclusive and welcomes everyone regardless of intrinsic characteristics such as sexual orientation or gender identity.
People who are oppressed, discriminated against, victimized and denied equality by a group tend, and rightfully so, to call that group on their actions. Their disdain for their oppressors is justifiable. We are defending ourselves against the first group I defined, not against the others. Don’t mistake our defending ourselves for a blanket statement against all Christians as that is not the case.
I particularly enjoyed this part:
“Children do not know what straight, homosexual, or coming out of the closet even means, but DC Comics and Marvel are using superheroes to confuse them on this topic to raise questions and awareness of an alternative lifestyle choice.”
Children do not know what straight, homosexual or coming out of the closet even means, but DC Comics and Marvel are doing their level best to actually educate children about these topics in an affirmative and understandable way.
This is “confusing” children?
Seems to me the only people confused here are the 13 or so ladies that think their number equals one million.
Actually 40,000 Mom’s this is not too complicated for children. You see they come in three varieties. It is Straight, Gay, Or Bi. They may have some additional variations but these are the three main buckets. And oddly enough children don’t really need explaining especially if they were raised in an open and inclusive environment. You see children will just accept any of these variations as normal. Only their neurotic adult overseers create confusion. They put their own feelings, fears, and contempt into the discussion with children. If they comfortable in their own skin and comfortable that we are all made differently.
Here is how simple this conversation could be.
Johnny gets the latest copy of X-Men.
He looks at the cover and notices something new - two guys getting married.
He goes hey Mom how come there are two men getting Married in X-Men?
Mom goes well Johnny, in our house there is a mom and dad who are married. In other families, its two men and in some others it’s two women. Who you marry depends on who you fall in love with and want to spend your life with.
Son… Oh - OK that’s cool.
End of Conversation.
